Tackling the post-pandemic food security crisis in America

How food banks and food security non-profits across the country are preparing themselves for the post-pandemic environment based on lessons learned in 2020

An estimated 40 million Americans will face food insecurity in 2021, despite government interventions, private sector support, and personal contributions to the charitable food system. The lingering effects of the pandemic – including unemployment and poverty rates – continue to drive an upsurge in the demand for food banks.

As the number of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity rose exponentially during the pandemic, food banks and food-related non-profits were operating under emergency conditions, having to find new food sources to replace those impacted by supply chain disruptions. Now, as we emerge from the pandemic, many food related non-profits are taking what they learned in 2020 to build organizational resilience by: improving operations, strengthening the capacity of staff members, leveraging real-time data-driven insights, and expanding their networks of local community partners and government organizations.

Many organizations have been leading efforts to address food insecurity and supporting charitable food organizations with their pandemic response. Join us for this panel discussion where we will bring together executives from Meals on Wheels America, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Rethink Food and Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C. to discuss the challenges they faced over the last year, and how they are preparing for a post-pandemic future.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a dramatic disruption to labor markets worldwide. The short-term consequences were sudden and often severe. What might the long-term outlook be? How, and why, has the pandemic changed the future of work coming in the next decade?

A new report from the McKinsey Global Institute examines how COVID-19 may reshape the future of work through the new lens of physical proximity. Join report authors Kweilin Ellingrud and Susan Lund as they discuss the research findings and how these trends are reshaping work, the workforce, and the workplace. Some of the areas they will discuss will include:

          · How many workers could need to change occupations by 2030

          · Whether adoption of AI and automation is accelerating due to the pandemic

          · The outlook and impact of remote work after the pandemic

          · The mix of occupations likely to emerge and how physical proximity plays a role

          · How companies and policy makers can help facilitate workforce transitions

MGI’s research finds that COVID-19 accelerated three workplace trends that are likely to persist to varying degrees after the pandemic: hybrid remote work, which will continue albeit at levels below the peak during the health crisis; e-commerce and the “delivery economy”, which grew two to five times faster in 2020 than before the pandemic, and which surveys suggest will persist at 50 to 75 percent of their peak; and automation and AI, which companies have enlisted to cope with COVID-19 disruptions and may accelerate adoption in the years ahead.

Deployment of these technologies has already risen in work arenas with high physical proximity, as firms deploy robots in manufacturing plants and warehouses, self-service customer kiosks and service robots in customer interaction arenas, and robotic process automation in offices. Knock-on effects of these trends could include a shift out of the densest high-cost cities and the shift from jobs in brick-and-mortar stores and restaurants to jobs in distribution centers and last-mile delivery, many of which are in the gig economy, among others.
